Gallery Playlist is pleased to present the solo exhibition by Cha Hyeon wook, titled "Stranger." It provides a unique opportunity to encounter Cha Hyeon wook's extraordinary landscapes, which have been garnering attention as some of the most contemporary East Asian landscape paintings in the Korean art scene.
Cha Hyeon wook's investigation into margins and voids, a narrative of filling and emptying, extends beyond traditional East Asian painting's concept of negative space.
Cha Hyeon wook's artwork encapsulates surreal and fantastical landscapes that are profoundly personal and modern. While he employs traditional techniques of East Asian landscape painting, his work forms an entirely unique genre distinct from its historical counterparts. The artist's distinct approach to color, texture, and the creation of space through embossing challenges convention, dismantles established forms, and represents the outcome of relentless analysis and material exploration, utilizing hanji paper, ink, and East Asian pigments. Cha Hyeon wook's unique palette evoke a distinct sense of beauty and enchanting ambience. The vast landscapes depicted are simultaneously the most terrestrial and intensely personal. While the margins appear empty, they are, in fact, filled with myriad elements not immediately visible. This emphasizes the artist's understanding of the potential for diverse modulations within this void, serving as a space for reflection. In his works, where margins are typically filled, boundaries are emptied, unveiling new relationships. This dialectic of part and whole, contemplation of life, and the understanding of the interplay between reality and imagination provide the contextual foundation for his art. Cha Hyeon wook (b. 1987) graduated from Kyungpook National University with a major in Korean painting from the College of Fine Arts. He holds an MFA from the School of Fine Arts at the Korea National University of Arts.
