Neo-Conceptualism

About

A label applied to art from the 1980s and ’90s that continued Conceptual Art’s questioning of the art object and the art institution, but with particular focus on the commodification of art and its relation to gender, race, and class. While there is no overriding aesthetic of Neo-Conceptualism, painting and sculpture were generally avoided in favor of photography, video, and film, as well as forms of mass-media such as advertising. Neo-Conceptualism was heavily informed by Postmodernist theory, which generally sought to take apart ideas of societal progress and individual authorship or genius. Within Neo-Conceptualism, one could include Appropriation and Neo-Geo.
