References to Art History
About
Works that visually reference a specific work of art or artist. Rather than explicitly sample a pre-existing work, as with appropriation, these works alter or distort their quotations, most often taken from icons of the Western canon. A classic example is Édouard Manet's reference in his Olympia (1863) to Titian's Venus of Urbino (1538).
