About
Art drawing attention to social injustice, exemplified by the work of American artists of the 1920s and ’30s like Ben Shahn, Thomas Hart Benton, Walker Evans, and Dorothea Lange, as well Ashcan School painters. The label has also been applied to the approach of 19th-century French Realism, the Mexican muralism of the 1920s and ‘30s, and the Neue Sachlichkeit of Weimar Germany.
